Douglas Hedwig, conducting Newberry's Victorian Cornet Band, in a live concert in Alexandria, VA, July 2014. Entitled, "Plantation Echoes," it was composed after the Civil War, and demonstrates the ongoing culture of interest in music of the American South. Performed on original instruments of the period.

DOUGLAS HEDWIG - CONDUCTOR In July, 2014, I had the pleasure of conducting the outstanding "period-instrument" historical band, Newberry's Victorian Cornet Band, in a recording session (CD to be commercially released soon), and public concert in Alexandria, VA. Here is a recently posted video from that concert which features the band's wonderful cornet soloist, Elisa Koehler. The band members all perform on original instruments of the late 19th century, and recreates the sound and appearance of a typical town band in turn of the century America. (From a conducting standpoint, it may be of some interest to note that there are particular challenges in accompanying a soloist in a work of this style: frequent tempo changes, unmetered recitative, instrumental balance, dynamics, matching and contrasting articulations, etc.)
