GITANJALI: Song of Devotion
Posted by Douglas Hedwig on June 15, 2018 at 10:44 AM

GITANJALI; Song of Devotion for chorus (SATB) was composed by Douglas Hedwig in 2016 and is set to a text by Nobel Prize winning Indian poet, Rabindranath Tagore. The music employs elements of traditional, classical vocal music of India, combined with contemporary, Western stylistic techniques that produce a unique blend of East and West. Although predominantly utilizing the original poetry, the composer has added several Hebrew, Arabic and Sanskrit words that add to the spiritual expansiveness and inclusiveness of the work. As the piece comes to a conclusion, the original melody is heard once more; this time harmonized in a somewhat more Western style, suggestive of Christian hymnody.

“Gitanjali” is one of Rabindrath Tagore’s best-known works, for which he received the Nobel Prize in 1913. Tagore was also a prolific composer of songs, often utilizing traditional India ragas (or, scales). He composed both the music and text for the national anthems of India and Bangladesh.
